Your UAN (Universal Account Number) is the single number that follows you across every job you work. All your EPF accounts from different employers link to this one number. The UAN Member Portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in is where you manage everything: check your balance, download your passbook, transfer PF from an old job, update your bank account details, and raise withdrawal claims.
This guide covers the full process from first-time activation to using every major feature on the portal.
Step 1: Activate Your UAN (First-Time Users)
Your employer generates your UAN when you join a company covered under EPF. You receive this number via SMS or through your company’s HR department. Before you can log in, you need to activate it.
- Go to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
- Click “Activate UAN” on the login page.
- Enter your UAN, Aadhaar number, and the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
- Click “Get Authorization PIN”. An OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Enter the OTP, set a new password, and click “Activate”.
Once activated, your UAN is ready to use. You do not need to repeat this step for future logins.
Step 2: Log In to the UAN Member Portal
- Visit unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in.
- Enter your UAN and password.
- Type the captcha code shown.
- Click “Sign In”.
If you forget your password, click “Forgot Password” and reset it using your Aadhaar OTP.
How to Check Your PF Balance
After logging in, two quick ways to see your balance:
- On the portal: Go to “View” in the top menu and click “Passbook”. Your passbook shows all contributions month by month from each employer.
- Via SMS: Send
EPFOHO UAN ENGto 7738299899 from your registered mobile number. You get a reply with your last contribution and total balance. - Via missed call: Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile. You get a balance SMS within seconds.
- UMANG App: Log in with your UAN on the UMANG app and check EPF balance under the EPFO section.
How to Download Your EPF Passbook
- Log in to the portal.
- Click “View” in the top navigation bar.
- Select “Passbook”.
- Choose the Member ID (each employer gives you a different Member ID, all linked to your UAN).
- The passbook opens as a PDF. Download and save it.
The passbook is updated once a month. If contributions from the current month are not visible, wait until the 25th of the following month.
How to Update KYC on the UAN Portal
KYC (Know Your Customer) linking is mandatory for online withdrawals and transfers. You need to link your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account.
- Log in and click “Manage” in the top menu.
- Select “KYC”.
- Click “Add” next to the document type: Aadhaar, PAN, or Bank.
- Enter the details and click “Save”.
- For Aadhaar and PAN, approval is automatic (verified against UIDAI and Income Tax databases).
- For bank account, your employer’s HR must digitally approve the update before it activates.
Once all three are approved and the Aadhaar is seeded, a green tick appears next to each entry.
How to Transfer PF from an Old Employer
When you change jobs, do not withdraw your PF. Transfer it instead. Transfers are tax-free and the old balance continues earning interest.
- Make sure your old and new Member IDs are both visible under “View” > “Service History”.
- Click “Online Services” and select “One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)”.
- Verify your personal details. Select whether you want to attest the request through your current employer or previous employer.
- Select the old Member ID from the dropdown.
- Enter the last 4 digits of your bank account or Aadhaar for authentication and click “Get OTP”.
- Enter the OTP and submit.
- The request goes to your employer for approval. Track status under “Online Services” > “Track Claim Status”.
Transfer is usually processed within 20 working days after employer approval.
Frequently Asked Questions
My UAN is not linked to my mobile number. How do I activate?
Contact your current HR department. They can update your mobile number in the EPFO employer portal. Once updated, the OTP-based activation works. Alternatively, visit your nearest EPFO office with your Aadhaar for in-person verification.
Can I check PF balance without logging in to the portal?
Yes. Use the SMS method or missed call service mentioned above. Both work if your mobile number is registered with your UAN. No portal login is required.
My employer says they deducted PF but it is not showing in my passbook. What should I do?
There is usually a delay of 1 to 2 months between deduction and credit. If the amount is still missing after 2 months, raise a grievance at epfigms.gov.in with your salary slip showing the PF deduction. The EPFO grievance cell responds within 30 days.
