Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is launching free education kits for students in government schools and residential hostels from June 2026, timed with the start of the new academic year. The kits go to students in government-run schools across the state, including tribal welfare schools and social welfare residential schools.
If your child studies in a Telangana government school, here is what the kit contains, who gets it, and whether your school is on the list.
What Is in the Education Kit?
The exact final contents of the 2026 kit are being confirmed by the Education Department, but based on the scheme design and previous Telangana student welfare distributions, the kit for each student includes:
- School bag
- Notebooks (ruled and unlined, based on class level)
- Geometry box with instruments
- Pens, pencils, and erasers
- Drawing book
- School uniform (2 sets)
- Pair of shoes and socks
For students in residential hostels (tribal welfare, social welfare, backward classes welfare), the kit may also include soap, toothpaste, and other personal care items depending on the hostel category.
The government distributes these kits at the school level. Teachers manage distribution. Students do not need to collect from a separate office.
Which Students Qualify?
All students currently enrolled in Telangana government schools from Class 1 to Class 10 are eligible.
Students in government residential schools and hostels run by:
Private school students are not covered. Students in government-aided private schools: check with your school principal, as their eligibility varies depending on which department funds their school.
Do You Need to Apply?
No. This is an automatic benefit delivered through the school. Your child’s name must be on the school’s official enrollment register. As long as your child attended school in 2025-26 and has been re-enrolled for 2026-27, the kit will be distributed at the school level.
If your child is a new admission in June 2026, inform the school office immediately after admission. New students may receive the kit slightly later than existing students, but the school is responsible for including them.
When Will Distribution Happen?
The scheme is timed for June 2026, with the academic year start. Distribution is expected in the first two weeks of the school reopening date. Exact dates will be announced by the District Education Officers and school headmasters.
If your child’s school has not distributed kits by the end of June 2026, contact the school headmaster first. If there is no resolution, reach the Mandal Education Officer (MEO) for your area.
Budget and Scale
The Telangana government has not published the exact budget figure for this scheme yet, but past student welfare kit programmes in the state have typically cost Rs 300 to Rs 500 per student. With over 40 lakh students in government schools across Telangana, the total outlay runs to several hundred crore rupees.
This is a recurring annual scheme, the government distributes these kits at the start of every academic year. If your child received kits last year through a similar programme, they will receive updated kits again for 2026-27.
Residential Hostel Students: Additional Note
Students in tribal welfare Gurukulam schools and social welfare residential schools get additional support beyond the kit. These schools provide free boarding, meals, and all educational materials including textbooks. The education kit is supplementary to what residential students already receive.
If your child is in a Gurukulam or social welfare residential school and the kit distribution has not happened, contact the school warden or the nearest Tribal Welfare Department office.
