The National Scholarship Portal is the central, unified platform through which the Government of India delivers almost all central and many state sector scholarships to students across the country. Instead of applying separately to dozens of different scheme websites, NSP brings registration, document verification, and Direct Benefit Transfer of scholarship money into one single online system.
What Types of Scholarships Are Available on NSP
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Pre-Matric Scholarships | For SC, ST, OBC, and minority students studying in Class 9 and 10. |
| Post-Matric Scholarships | For SC, ST, OBC, EBC, and minority students in Class 11 onward through postgraduate study. |
| Merit-cum-Means Scholarships | Top class education schemes and merit-based awards for high achievers. |
| Top Class Education Scholarships | For SC/ST students admitted to premier institutes (IITs, IIMs, NITs, AIIMS, and similar). |
| Central Sector Scholarship | For meritorious students from low-income families pursuing higher education. |
| Disability Scholarships | Pre-matric and post-matric scholarships for students with disabilities. |
| State-specific scholarships | Several states route their own scholarship schemes through NSP as well. |
Who Is Eligible?
Eligibility varies by specific scheme but generally depends on:
- Social category: SC, ST, OBC, EBC, Minority, or General (merit-based schemes).
- Family income: most schemes have an annual family income ceiling, commonly ranging from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh depending on the scheme and category.
- Academic level: from Class 9 through doctoral research, with different schemes targeting different stages.
- Minimum academic performance in the previous qualifying examination, usually 50% or above, though specific thresholds vary by scheme.
- Enrolment in a recognised institution affiliated with a government board, university, or approved education body.
How to Register on NSP (First-Time Applicants)
- Visit scholarships.gov.in.
- Click “New Registration” under the Student section.
- Read the instructions and click “Continue”.
- Fill in the registration form: state, scheme type, name, date of birth, gender, category, mobile number, and email address.
- Set a password for your account and complete the registration. Note down your generated Application ID and Registration ID carefully, as these are required for every subsequent login.
How to Apply for a Scholarship After Registration
- Log in to NSP using your Application ID/Registration ID and password.
- The portal automatically shows the scholarship schemes for which you may be eligible based on your registration details, or you can browse the full list.
- Select the scholarship scheme that matches your educational level and category.
- Fill in personal details: Aadhaar number, bank account details, family income, parent/guardian details.
- Fill in academic details: current institution, course, year of study, previous exam marks, and roll number.
- Upload all required documents as per the checklist shown for your selected scheme.
- Review the complete form carefully before final submission, as most fields cannot be edited after submission without going through a correction window if one is opened.
- Submit the application. Print or save the final submitted application form with your Application Reference Number.
Documents Commonly Required
- Aadhaar card.
- Caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC, if applying under a category-specific scheme).
- Income certificate issued by a competent authority (tehsildar, revenue officer, or designated income certificate authority).
- Previous year’s mark sheet.
- Bonafide/enrolment certificate from the current institution.
- Bank account passbook copy (Aadhaar-linked, mandatory for DBT).
- Passport-size photograph.
- Disability certificate, if applicable.
Institution Verification: A Critical Step
After you submit your application, it does not go straight for approval. Your educational institution must first log in to their own NSP institute portal and verify the details you entered: your enrolment status, course, and attendance. Only after the institute confirms your application does it move to the District Nodal Officer (DNO) and then the State Nodal Officer or Ministry for final approval.
This is why scholarship disbursement can sometimes feel slow: if your institute delays verification, your entire application is stuck regardless of how quickly you submitted it. If your status has been stuck at “Pending at Institute Level” for an unusually long time, follow up directly with your college’s scholarship cell or nodal officer.
Renewal of Scholarship in Subsequent Years
For multi-year courses, scholarships are not automatically continued each year. You need to apply for renewal:
- Log in to NSP using your existing Registration ID.
- Select “Renewal Application” instead of “Fresh Application”.
- Update your current year of study and any changed details (new mark sheet, current institution if changed).
- Submit before the renewal deadline announced for that academic year. Missing the renewal window can mean losing scholarship support for that year, even if you remain otherwise eligible.
How to Track Your Application Status
- Log in to scholarships.gov.in with your credentials.
- Go to “Application Status” or “Track Status” in your dashboard.
- The status shows the current stage: Submitted, Pending at Institute, Pending at District, Pending at State, Sanctioned, or Disbursed.
- Once “Sanctioned” and “Disbursed” both show, check the Payment Status tab to confirm the actual bank credit, which is processed through PFMS.
Common Reasons for NSP Application Rejection
- Aadhaar details not matching the name/date of birth as per official records.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded for DBT purposes.
- Documents uploaded are blurry, incomplete, or in the wrong format.
- Income certificate exceeding the prescribed ceiling for the selected scheme.
- Duplicate application detected (applying for multiple overlapping schemes incorrectly).
- Institution failing to verify the application within the stipulated time, leading to automatic rejection in some cycles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for more than one scholarship scheme at the same time on NSP?
Generally, you can apply for only one scholarship scheme per academic year under the central NSP framework, since the schemes are designed to avoid duplication of benefits for the same student. If you are unsure which scheme best suits your eligibility, review the scheme details carefully or consult your institution’s scholarship cell before applying, as switching mid-cycle is often not possible.
What is the difference between Application ID and Registration ID on NSP?
The Registration ID is generated when you first create your NSP account and remains your permanent login identifier across years. The Application ID is generated each time you submit an application for a specific scholarship scheme in a given academic year. You will use your Registration ID to log in each year, and reference the relevant Application ID when discussing a specific year’s scholarship status.
My scholarship application shows “Sanctioned” but I have not received the money. How long should I wait?
After sanction, the disbursement process goes through PFMS, which typically takes a few weeks depending on the volume of beneficiaries being processed in that cycle and your bank’s processing time. If it has been more than a month since the status changed to “Sanctioned” with no payment received, check the PFMS payment status separately using your bank account number, and if the issue persists, raise a grievance through the NSP helpdesk or your institution’s nodal officer.
