The Uttar Pradesh government approved Rs 400 crore in 2026 for the Rani Laxmi Bai Scooty Yojana, under which 50,000 girls studying in UP’s government colleges and universities will get a free scooty. This scheme is specifically for girls who passed Class 12 from a government school and went on to enrol in a government degree college or university in UP.
If your daughter or someone you know fits that profile, here is everything that matters: eligibility, which districts are included, how the selection works, and when applications open.
What Is the Rani Laxmi Bai Scooty Yojana?
The Yojana gives a free scooty, not a cash equivalent, an actual vehicle, to meritorious girl students currently pursuing undergraduate education at government colleges in UP. The stated goal is to make daily commuting easier so that distance does not become a reason for girls to drop out of college.
The scheme has existed in different forms under Uttar Pradesh before. The 2026 version has a larger budget (Rs 400 crore is roughly four times what was allocated in earlier cycles) and a higher target count.
Who Is Eligible?
You need to meet all of these conditions:
Gender: Only girl students are eligible.
School background: You must have passed Class 12 from a government school in UP (not a private, aided, or convent school, it has to be a state government school).
Current enrollment: You must currently be enrolled in a government degree college, state university, or government polytechnic in Uttar Pradesh.
Marks: You should have scored at least 75% in Class 12 for general category. OBC students need 70%. SC/ST students need 65%. These cut-offs were used in the last cycle, the 2026 cycle’s exact cut-offs will be published in the official notification.
Age: Generally up to 25 years. Students already receiving a scholarship under another scheme are typically still eligible, the scooty is considered a separate benefit.
Domicile: You must be a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
How Are Students Selected?
Selection is merit-based within each category. The department compiles a merit list using Class 12 marks. The top 50,000 eligible applicants across all categories get the scooties.
The distribution is category-wise, which means the total 50,000 is split across General, OBC, SC, and ST quotas based on reservation norms. There is no district quota, students from any district compete within their category.
In previous cycles, the merit cut-off for general category students ended up around 82 to 85% because of high competition. OBC cut-offs were around 78 to 80%. These numbers will shift depending on how many applications come in for 2026.
How to Apply
The official application portal for UP government scholarships and schemes is scholarship.up.gov.in. The Rani Laxmi Bai Scooty Yojana applications are processed through the Higher Education department.
The application window has not been officially opened as of mid-June 2026. The government is expected to publish the formal notification with exact dates by July 2026.
When the portal opens:
1. Register on scholarship.up.gov.in with your mobile number and Aadhaar. 2. Log in and look for the Rani Laxmi Bai Scooty Yojana application form. 3. Fill in your Class 12 details, your current college enrollment, your category, and your Aadhaar-linked bank account. 4. Upload documents (see below). 5. Submit and note your application number.
Your college also needs to verify your enrollment before the application is considered complete. Do not leave this step until the last day.

Which Colleges Are Included?
Government degree colleges under the UP Higher Education department, state universities (like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Lucknow University), and government polytechnics are included.
Private colleges, even aided ones, are generally not eligible. If you are studying at an unaided private institution, you will not qualify even if all other conditions are met.
What Happens After Selection?
Once the merit list is published, selected students get a letter from the District Higher Education Officer. The scooty is distributed through a state government event, usually organised at the district level. Students come with their documents, collect the vehicle, and sign an acknowledgment.
The scooty is registered in the student’s name. She is not required to return it. There is no bond period or service obligation attached.
Common Questions
Can a student who already got a scooty under a previous cycle apply again? No. If you received a free scooty under any government scheme in UP before, you are not eligible again.
My Class 12 school is aided, does that count? No. The scheme specifically requires a government school, not government-aided. Aided schools have private management. If you are unsure whether your school was government or aided, check with your district education office.
Can students in the second or third year of their degree apply? Yes, provided you have not received the scooty before. It is not limited to first-year students.
