Delhi has a new scheme for girl children. The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana replaced the old Ladli scheme from April 1, 2026. President Droupadi Murmu launched it on March 2, 2026, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi.
If your daughter was registered under Ladli, her benefits continue under the new scheme. If you have not registered yet and you have a girl child in Delhi, this post covers everything you need to know.
What Is Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana?
It is a staged financial investment scheme for girl children in Delhi. The government deposits money at key milestones in a girl’s education, from birth through graduation. Those deposits go into SBI Life Insurance and grow over time. When the girl completes graduation, the total payout works out to over Rs 1.25 lakh.
The Women and Child Development Department of the Delhi government runs the scheme. The entire process, from application to payment, happens online. No office visits needed.
Stage-wise Money: How Much and When
The government deposits money at each educational stage. The amounts below are for girls born in institutional deliveries (hospitals). Home births get slightly lower amounts at birth.
- At birth: Rs 11,000 (institutional delivery) or Rs 10,000 (home delivery)
- Admission to Class 1: Rs 5,000
- Admission to Class 6: Rs 5,000
- Admission to Class 9: Rs 5,000
- Passing Class 10: Rs 5,000
- Admission to Class 12: Rs 5,000
- Graduation (Year 1): Rs 5,000
- Graduation (Year 2): Rs 5,000
- Graduation (Year 3): Rs 10,000
Total government deposit: Rs 56,000. Because the money sits in SBI Life Insurance earning returns, the maturity value by graduation exceeds Rs 1.25 lakh.
Who Can Apply?
Income limit: Your family’s annual income must not exceed Rs 1.2 lakh. This is a BPL-level cutoff.
Residency: You must have lived in Delhi for at least 3 years. The application requires proof of this.
Girl child limit: The scheme covers a maximum of two daughters per family.
School requirement: The girl must be enrolled in a government school or government-aided school in Delhi to receive the milestone payments after birth. Fees from private schools do not trigger the deposits.
Documentation: The application is made in the girl’s name at birth, not later. If you wait until your daughter is in Class 6, you forfeit all the earlier deposits. Register immediately after birth or as soon as you learn about the scheme.
How Lakhpati Bitiya Differs from the Old Ladli Yojana
Ladli ran from 2008 to March 31, 2026. Under Ladli, the deposits were smaller: Rs 11,000 at birth for institutional delivery, Rs 5,000 at each subsequent milestone. The maturity value was also lower.
Lakhpati Bitiya keeps the same milestone structure but deposits Rs 56,000 total instead of Ladli’s Rs 41,000. The insurance vehicle is still SBI Life. The income limit stays at Rs 1.2 lakh annually. The two-girl cap remains.
Girls already registered under Ladli do not need to reapply. Their accounts are automatically migrated to the new scheme.
How to Apply
Go to the Delhi e-District portal: edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in
You can also apply at your nearest District Women and Child Development office. Online is faster.
Documents needed:
After submission, the department verifies the application. If everything checks out, the SBI Life account is created and the first deposit of Rs 11,000 or Rs 10,000 happens automatically.
What About Girls Born Before April 1, 2026?
If your daughter is already of school age and you registered her under Ladli, she continues under Lakhpati Bitiya and gets the enhanced amounts for remaining milestones. The earlier milestones that have already passed are credited at the Ladli rate, the enhancement applies only to future deposits.
If your daughter was born before 2026 and you never registered under Ladli, you cannot register now for the birth deposit. But you can still register and claim from the current educational stage onwards. Contact your nearest District WCD office to understand what you are eligible for.
Saheli Pink Card: A Related Scheme
On the same day as the Lakhpati Bitiya launch, Delhi also introduced the Saheli Pink National Common Mobility Card. Women and transgender residents can use this card for free travel on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses.
The card is not automatic. You apply for it separately at the DTC office or through the Delhi Transport Corporation’s online portal. It is worth doing if you or women in your family regularly use DTC buses.
Grievance and Help
Toll-free helpline for Delhi Women and Child Development: 011-23386928
You can also raise a grievance at the Delhi government’s e-District portal under the grievance section. Note your application number from the time of registration.
The scheme budget is Rs 160 crore for the first year, so rejection due to fund shortage is not likely for eligible applicants. The main reasons for rejection are income above the Rs 1.2 lakh limit, inadequate residency proof, or applying after the girl has already passed multiple milestones without prior registration.
What to Do Right Now
If your daughter was born in Delhi after April 1, 2026: Apply within 90 days of birth at edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in.
If your daughter is already in school and registered under Ladli: Check your SBI Life account details to confirm migration to Lakhpati Bitiya. Your WCD office can confirm this.
If your daughter is already in school and never registered: Visit your nearest WCD office with your income certificate and residence proof to understand which stage deposits you can still claim.
