West Bengal’s Food and Supplies Department cancelled 63 lakh ration cards in 2026 following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s beneficiary database. If your family has been getting ration on a West Bengal card, you need to check whether your card is still active. A lot of people found out their card was cancelled only when they went to collect their monthly ration and the dealer said nothing was showing.
This post covers why the cancellation happened, how to check your card status, what to do if your name was removed, and how to apply for a new card.
Why Were 63 Lakh Ration Cards Cancelled?
The state government conducted an SIR: Special Intensive Revision, of the ration card database. This is a periodic exercise where the Food and Supplies Department checks whether existing beneficiaries still meet the eligibility criteria under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Cards get cancelled during SIR for several reasons. The most common ones: the cardholder has died and no one updated the record, the family income went above the BPL threshold, duplicate cards exist for the same household, or the address on the card does not match any valid residence.
63 lakh cancellations is a large number for one SIR exercise. Some of these cancellations are expected and legitimate. But errors happen during database reviews at this scale, and if your card was wrongly cancelled, you have the right to challenge it.
How to Check If Your Ration Card Is Still Active
Go to the West Bengal Public Distribution System (PDS) portal: wbpds.wb.gov.in
On the homepage, look for “Beneficiary Search” or “Ration Card Status.” Enter your ration card number or your Aadhaar number linked to the card.
The result will show whether your card is active, inactive, or cancelled. It will also show the names of members listed on the card and the category (AAY, PHH, SPHH).
If you do not have internet access, visit your nearest Ration Dealer or the local Food and Supplies office (Block Supply Office in rural areas, or the Circle Food Supply Office in urban areas). They can look up your status on the department’s internal system.
My Card Was Cancelled: What Now?
First, check the reason. The portal sometimes shows a reason code. If it does not, the Food Supply office will have the reason on file.
If the cancellation was an error: You can file a complaint at the Block Supply Office. Bring your old ration card (or its number), your Aadhaar, your family’s voter IDs, and proof of address. The officer will flag it for review. Wrongful cancellations during SIR exercises are common enough that the department has a standard review process for them.
If a family member died and the card was cancelled: The other members can apply to have the card reissued in the name of the surviving head of household. The deceased member’s name gets removed, and a new card is issued for the remaining family.
If you lost eligibility: If your family’s income genuinely crossed the BPL threshold, the cancellation stands. You will not be eligible for NFSA benefits under a Priority Household (PHH) or Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card.
How to Apply for a New Ration Card in West Bengal 2026
Online application: Go to food.wb.gov.in and look for the ration card application link. You will need to register with your mobile number first.
Documents required:
- Aadhaar card for all family members
- Voter ID of the head of household
- Proof of address (electricity bill, bank passbook, or rent agreement)
- Income certificate from a government authority (for BPL category)
- Passport-size photo of the head of household
Offline application: Collect the form from your Block Supply Office or download it from the Food department website. Submit the filled form along with photocopies of all documents at the same office.
After submission, a field verification happens. An officer visits your residence to confirm the details. If everything checks out, the card is issued within 30 to 45 days.
Categories of Ration Cards in West Bengal
West Bengal issues ration cards under three NFSA categories.
AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana): For the poorest of the poor. Cardholders get 35 kg of grain per month at subsidised rates. This category targets families with no steady income, daily wage labourers, destitute widows, elderly people with no support.
SPHH (State Priority Household): A state-level category for households that are poor but do not fall into the AAY definition. Benefits vary slightly from PHH.
PHH (Priority Household): The standard BPL category under NFSA. Each member gets 5 kg of grain per month at Rs 1 to Rs 3 per kg depending on the grain.
When you apply, the officer assesses your household and assigns a category. You cannot self-select.
What About the Annapurna Yojana Connection?
Some people are asking whether the ration card cancellation affects their Annapurna Yojana eligibility. The answer is no, they are separate databases. Annapurna Yojana (the Rs 3,000 monthly women’s scheme) runs through the Women and Child Development department using the electoral roll and Aadhaar for verification, not the ration card database.
That said, if your Aadhaar has an outdated address that differs from what is on record with the Food department, fixing that helps across multiple schemes. Getting your Aadhaar address updated at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra is worth doing even if your ration card is fine.
Grievance and Appeal
If the Block Supply Office does not resolve your complaint within 30 days, escalate to the District Food and Supplies Controller. Every district in West Bengal has one.
You can also file a grievance online at pgrs.wb.gov.in, this is the state’s public grievance portal. Note down your complaint number and follow up every two weeks if there is no update.
The Food Department’s toll-free helpline is 1967 and 1800-345-5505. These numbers work during government office hours.
Quick Checklist
Check your card status at wbpds.wb.gov.in before your next ration collection day. If your card is active and all names are correct, nothing else needs to be done right now. If something is wrong, the Block Supply Office is your first stop, go in person with your Aadhaar and voter ID rather than waiting on phone calls or the helpline.
New card applications take 30 to 45 days from the date of field verification. Start the process now if your card was cancelled and you believe you are still eligible.
