If you’ve driven past a police checkpoint recently, you might have noticed cops scanning number plates or checking windshields for a coloured sticker. That’s because the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) is no longer just a “good to have”. It’s essentially mandatory across India, with strict deadlines and heavy fines now active in many states.
Whether you drive a shiny new SUV or a trusted 10-year-old scooter, here is everything you need to know about HSRP in 2025 without the confusing jargon.
1. What Exactly is an HSRP?
Think of an HSRP as a “digital passport” for your vehicle. Unlike the old plastic or painted metal plates that could be easily swapped or faked, an HSRP is a tamper-proof aluminium plate.
Key Security Features:
- Chromium Hologram: A hot-stamped Ashoka Chakra that cannot be removed.
- Laser-Etched Code: A unique 10-digit PIN laser-branded into the plate. This code is linked to your vehicle’s engine and chassis number in the national database (VAHAN).
- Snap Locks: Once these non-removable locks are snapped on, the plate cannot be removed without breaking them. This makes theft virtually impossible.
- IND Script: The letters “IND” are inscribed in a blue security film.
2. The “Sticker” Confusion: What are Colour-Coded Stickers?
Along with the plates, you must have a Third Registration Mark—a colour-coded sticker pasted on your windshield (inside, top-left). This tells authorities your fuel type from a distance.
- 🔵 Light Blue: Petrol & CNG vehicles
- 🟠 Orange: Diesel vehicles
- 🟢 Green: Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Note: If you have an HSRP but lost the sticker (e.g., during windshield replacement), you must book a replacement sticker. Driving without it can still attract a fine.
The Step-by-Step Application Process
Applying for an HSRP is entirely online. You do not need to visit the RTO. However, the website you use depends on which state your vehicle was registered in.
Method A: For Vehicles Registered in Delhi, UP, & Himachal Pradesh
If your car has a DL, UP, or HP number, the process is streamlined via BookMyHSRP.
Step 1: Visit the Portal. Go to www.bookmyhsrp.com.
Step 2: Select Booking Type
- Click on “High Security Registration Plate with Colour Sticker” (Yellow button) if you need the full set.
- Click on “Only Colour Sticker” (Grey button) if you have the plates but lost the sticker (e.g., windshield replaced).
Step 3: Enter Vehicle Details.s You will need your RC (Registration Certificate) for this. Enter:
- State of Registration (e.g., Delhi).
- Registration Number.
- Chassis Number (Last 5 digits only).
- Engine Number (Last 5 digits only).
- Click “Click here” to verify.
Step 4: Choose Delivery Mode
- Home Delivery: Highly recommended. Costs roughly ₹250 extra. A technician comes to your home/office to fit it.
- Dealer Appointment: Free (or nominal cost). You choose a car showroom near you and drive there for fitment.
Step 5: Pick a Slot & P.ay Choose a Date and Time slot. Pay online (UPI, Card, Netbanking).
- Cost: Approx ₹400 (Two-wheeler) / ₹700–₹1100 (Four-wheeler).
Step 6: Save the Receipt! Download the receipt. It contains your appointment details. Keep this on your phone. If a traffic cop stops you before the appointment date, this receipt is your “Get Out of Jail Free” card.
Method B: For Vehicles Registered in All Other States (Maharashtra, Karnataka, etc.)
If your vehicle is from MH, KA, GJ, TN, etc., you should route your request through the SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) website. This is the central hub that directs you to the correct manufacturer.
Step 1: Visit the SIAM Portal. Go to www.siam.in and click on “Book HSRP” (usually in the top menu or a banner).
Step 2: Basic Details Enter your:
- Full Name.
- Vehicle Registration Number.
- Email ID & Mobile Number.
- State & District.
Step 3: Select Vehicle Type & Brand Select “2-wheeler/3-wheeler/4-wheeler” and then your brand (e.g., Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Honda, Hero).
Step 4: Redirect to Vendor Once you select the brand, SIAM will say something like “You are being redirected to [Vendor Name]”.
- Common Vendors: Celex, FTA HSRP, Rosmerta.
- Don’t panic if the website changes; these areauthorisedd vendors.
Step 5: The “Order” Page. On the vendor site, you will again have to enter:
- Chassis No. (Last 5 digits).
- Engine No. (Last 5 digits).
- Bharat Stage (BS4/BS6 – check your RC if unsure, usually by year of purchase).
Step 6: Payment & Appointment.t Similar to Method A, choose Home Delivery (if available in your city) or Dealer Fitment. Pay the fee and download the receipt.
Part 3: What If…? (Troubleshooting)
Scenario 1: “The website says my maker is not registered.” This happens with very old vehicles (15+ years) or defunct brands (like Daewoo or older Fiats).
- Solution: You must visit your local RTO personally. They will manually assign a vendor code for your vehicle so you can book it online or pay offline at the RTO counter.
Scenario 2: “I lost my plate in an accident.”
- Solution: You cannot buy a replacement locally. Go to the same website you used to book originally (or try BookMyHSRP/SIAM) and look for the “Replacement Plate” option. You will likely have to upload a copy of the FIR (First Information Report) proving the plate was lost/stolen.
Scenario 3: “I have a transfer case (NOC).” If you moved your car from Karnataka to Maharashtra but haven’t changed the number plate to “MH” yet:
- Solution: You must apply for HSRP based on the original state. If your number is “KA”, you apply via the Karnataka HSRP link, even if you live in Mumbai. However, they might not offer home delivery in Mumbai. You may have to coordinate with a dealer.
Part 4: The “Sticker” Guide (Third Registration Mark)
Don’t ignore the sticker. It is just as mandatory as the plate.
- Where to stick it: Inside the windshield, top-left corner (passenger side).
- Blue Sticker: For Petrol and CNG vehicles.
- Orange Sticker: For Diesel vehicles.
- Green Sticker: For Electric Vehicles.
Pro Tip: When cleaning your car windshield from the inside, be gentle around this sticker. If it peels off, you have to buy a replacement online (approx ₹100).
Final Checklist Before You Drive
- Check the Rivets: Ensure the person installing the plate uses the “snap lock” rivets, not standard screws. Standard screws are illegal for HSRP.
- Check the SMS: After installation, you should receive an SMS confirming that your HSRP code has been linked to your vehicle on the VAHAN portal.
- Carry the Receipt: Keep the payment receipt in your dashboard for at least 15 days until the online database updates fully.
5. Common FAQs
Q: My car already has a plate that looks like HSRP. Do I need to change it?
A: Check for two things: the laser-etched code below the main number and the Ashoka Chakra hologram. If your plate is just a white plate with “IND” written on it but lacks the laser code or snap locks, it is a fake lookalike. You need to replace it.
Q: Can I just buy a plate from a local shop?
A: No. Local shops cannot provide the laser-coded plates linked to the VAHAN database. Any plate bought from a roadside shop is illegal, even if it looks “high security.”
Q: What if I lose my HSRP in an accident?
A: You cannot just print a new one. You must go to the portal (BookMyHSRP/SIAM) and select “Replacement Booking” for a damaged/lost plate. You will need to file a police FIR if it was stolen.
Q: Is HSRP mandatory for Electric Vehicles?
A: Yes. EVs get a Green number plate (with white font for private, yellow font for commercial), and they also need the Green windshield sticker.
