Ujjwala Yojana 2025: How to Get a Free LPG Connection?

Updated on June 14, 2025

In many rural households and below-poverty-line households, women continue to rely on firewood, cow dung, and coal for cooking. This not only poses health risks due to indoor air pollution but also consumes significant time and effort in collecting these fuels.

According to WHO estimates, about 5 lakh deaths in India alone are due to unclean cooking fuels. Recognizing this, the Indian government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) as a flagship program for rural development and poverty alleviation.

This initiative aims to provide a free LPG connection to adult women beneficiaries from below-poverty-line households, promoting clean cooking fuel usage and improving energy access.

What is the Ujjwala Yojana?

The Ujjwala scheme was launched on 1st May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, as part of the government’s efforts to enhance rural development and women’s empowerment. The target under this Pradhan Mantri Yojana was to release 8 crore cooking cylinder connections to deprived households by March 2020.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) offers a free LPG connection to women from below-poverty-line households, covering the cost of the LPG connection, including the cylinder security deposit, pressure regulator, hose, and the first refill.

Additionally, beneficiaries receive a free petrol stove. This initiative aims to reduce health hazards associated with traditional cooking methods and empower rural women by providing them with access to clean cooking fuel.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the Ujjwala scheme for the release of 75 lakh LPG connections over three years from Financial Year 2023-24 to 2025-26.

This extension, known as Ujjwala 2.0, will increase the total number of PMUY beneficiaries to 10.35 crore, significantly improving LPG coverage across rural households.

Women’s ease of living through clean cooking

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2.4 billion people worldwide (which is around one-third of the global population) rely on open fires or inefficient stoves fueled by kerosene, biomass (such as wood, animal dung, and crop waste), and coal for cooking.

The Ujjwala Yojana aims to address this issue, particularly for rural women, by providing access to clean cooking fuel and improving health outcomes.
