The Dr Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages is a central government initiative aimed at breaking down caste barriers and promoting social unity in India. This guide outlines the eligibility criteria, financial benefits, and the updated application process for 2025 in a clear and straightforward format.
Purpose and Incentive Amount
The primary goal of this scheme is to end caste prejudice and promote social integration. The government provides a total incentive of ₹2,50,000 (₹2.5 Lakh) to eligible couples. This amount is not given entirely as cash in hand to ensure financial stability for the couple.
Disbursement Structure
The payment is split into two distinct parts. First, an amount of ₹1.5 Lakh is transferred directly to the couple’s joint bank account via RTGS or NEFT. The remaining ₹1 Lakh is kept in a Fixed Deposit (FD) for three years. This FD, along with the accumulated interest, is released to the couple only after the three-year lock-in period ends.
Eligibility Criteria for 2025
To qualify for the grant, couples must meet specific conditions set by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
Caste Requirement: one spouse must belong to a Scheduled Caste (SC) and the other belongs to a Non-Scheduled Caste (General, OBC, etc.). This specific combination is the core requirement of the scheme.
Marriage Registration: The marriage must be validly registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The couple needs to submit an affidavit declaring that their marriage is legally valid. While some court judgments have debated the acceptance of the Special Marriage Act in specific contexts, the official guidelines strictly prioritise the Hindu Marriage Act.
First Marriage Rule: The grant is applicable only for the first marriage of both partners. Second marriages are generally not eligible unless specific state-level exceptions exist for unique cases.
Application Timeline: Time is critical for this scheme. You must submit the completed application within one year of the marriage registration. Applications submitted after this one-year window are typically rejected without appeal.
Income Limit Status: The central government removed the annual income cap (previously ₹5 Lakh) in 2017 to make the scheme accessible to all economic groups. However, since the scheme is implemented through state departments, some states may still enforce their own income limits. It is highly recommended to verify this with your local District Social Welfare Officer.
Updated Application Process
A significant change occurred in April 2023 regarding how applications are handled. You can no longer apply directly to the Dr Ambedkar Foundation in New Delhi.
Where to Submit: You must now submit your application to the Department of Social Welfare or the Department of SC/ST Welfare of your respective State Government or Union Territory.
Step-by-Step Procedure: Begin by gathering all necessary documents. Visit the office of the District Magistrate (DM), District Collector, or District Social Welfare Officer in your area to obtain the application form. Once filled, the form must be accompanied by a recommendation letter from a sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), or the District Collector. Submit the full proposal to the state office, which will verify the details and forward the approved proposal to the Ministry for fund release.
Online Options Many states, such as Rajasthan, Odisha, and Delhi, have integrated this scheme into their own online portals (e.g., e-District or Social Welfare Portals). Checking your state’s official welfare website is the most efficient way to start.
Required Documents
You must prepare self-attested copies of specific documents to prove your eligibility.
Personal and Marriage Proof: You will need the Marriage Certificate registered under the Hindu Marriage Act and a joint photograph of the married couple. An affidavit stating that this is the first marriage for both partners is also mandatory.
Caste and Identity Proof: Submit the Caste Certificates of both the husband and wife issued by a competent authority like a Tehsildar or SDM. Additionally, include Date of Birth proof (such as a 10th-grade certificate or Birth Certificate), Aadhaar Cards, and PAN Cards for both individuals.
Financial and Official Recommendations: Provide details of a functional joint bank account, including a copy of the passbook showing both names and photos. Finally, the recommendation letter from an MP, MLA, or District Collector is essential to process the file.
Common Reasons for Rejection
Applications are most frequently rejected because they are submitted after the one-year deadline has passed. Another common error is registering the marriage under the Special Marriage Act instead of the Hindu Marriage Act, without verifying state-specific allowances. Submitting the file without the mandatory recommendation letter from a public representative (MP/MLA) will also lead to immediate rejection. Ensuring all caste validity certificates are current and authentic is vital to avoid disqualification.
If you have married outside your caste and one partner is SC, you are entitled to this support. Visit your District Social Welfare Office immediately to start the process, as the one-year clock is ticking!
